as the bicentenary of his birth.
Antonio Meucci was born in a suburb of Florence called San Frediano. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts, then worked for customs and for the theater where he met his future wife Ester Mochi.
Meucci, due to poor economic conditions of his family is forced to leave the Duchy of Tuscany and emigrate to Cuba where he accepts the work for the theater in Havana. When the theater was destroyed by fire moved to the United States, specifically in New York, where he opened a candle factory. At that time he met the inventor Giuseppe Garibaldi and hired him to work at the factory.
In 1854 Meucci invented the first model of phone. Originally intended to communicate with his wife, who suffers from a serious illness, he had to stay in bed.
Unfortunately the company failed, and candles Meucci was an economic crisis. He continued to develop its useful invention, but forced to live with the help of friends, did not have enough money to patent "the teletrofono" , as he called him. He can only get a temporary concession, which he renewed from year to year at a price of $ 10.
then tried to bring his invention to a telegraph company of New York, but the potential phone were not understood. On March 7, 1876 Alexander Graham Bell patented the "proper" phone: Meucci began a lawsuit against him, but, because of its economic crisis does not have enough money to pursue it. In 1887 the case ended in a victory for Bell, since according to the court, would Meucci invented the telephone Bell and mechanical and electrical, which was the subject of the patent. So for a long time the merits were awarded to Bell.
On 11 June 2002 the U.S. Congress recognizes that the work of Meucci in the invention of the telephone should be acknowledged.
Not long ago, "Rai Uno" presented in prime time a film on the life of the inventor Italian. In the leading role he played Massimo Ghini, flanked by Tosca d'Aquino (wife Esther), Flavio Insinna (Salvi, his friend and rival in love) and Roberto Alpi (Garibaldi).
